Educational Enrichment Programs

OCEAN DAY SCHOOL YEAR OF HEALTHY LIVING

The 2009/2010 school year will be “The Year of Healthy Living”.

 

New Health Program: The school has purchased a new health program for students.  On Wednesdays during specials Mrs. Quinn will supervise the teaching of our new health curriculum.

 

Weekly: Sundae, a therapy dog, will visit the school on Fridays.  Therapy dogs are trained to provide affection and comfort to people.  Sundae will sit and listen while our children read to her.  Sundae’s presence will encourage students to read and help our students build their reading skills and self confidence.

 

Getting Fit: On Mondays and Fridays students will participate in aerobic exercise for their gym period.  The school has purchased child aerobics tapes which include dance aerobics, walk aerobics, and a variety of other fun exercise programs for children.  School staff will also participate in the aerobic exercise program.

 

SEPTEMBER 2009

Jersey Shore University Medical Center: PAWSITIVE ACTION! – Dr. Bernard will present his message “Treat Yourself Right” by making smart choices about nutrition.  He will talk about the food pyramid and the importance of eating the right amount.

Date: September 16 (Pre-K to 8th grade).

 

OCTOBER 2009

Field Trip to BounceU (Lakewood): - Studies show that physical activity inspires cognitive and creative growth in children.  Students will have the opportunity to exercise and have fun on Bounce U’s unique equipment.

This field trip is sponsored by the Booth Family to celebrate Felicity’s seventh birthday.

Date:  October 23 – 12:30 to 2:30 (Pre-K to 8th grade).

 

Pumpkin Patch Trip (DeWolf’s Farm, New Egypt) – Students will enjoy a fun filled day of outdoor activities to include pumpkin picking, a hay ride, a corn maze, and an outdoor picnic for lunch.  Cost is $8.00 per student.

NOVEMBER 2009

Anti-Smoking and Tobacco Use - Registered nurse and ODS parent, Ms. Tina Izer will talk to students about the dangers of smoking to include stained teeth, bad breath, cancer (oral and lung),  heart disease and lung disease.

DECEMBER 2009

Living in a Healthy Environment – Peppermint Puppeteers will perform an ecology show with six stories of “Go Green”.  Students will learn how to reduce waster, recycle and keep the Earth clean.

FEBRUARY 2010

 

Dental Health Month – Students will learn the importance of good dental health with a presentation from Kids Dental Kare.  Students will receive toothbrushes and instructions on the proper way to brush teeth.

Enjoying the Arts – Mrs. Martin’s class will travel to NYC to see West Side Story (a follow up treat to having read the story).  Students will enjoy a nutritious lunch (learning to eat healthy when eating out) and a relaxing afternoon at the theater.

MARCH 2010

Unwinding after Terra Nova Testing – Standardized testing will be the week of March 8.  By Friday afternoon the students need to unwind and release all their boxed up energy.  Students will go to My Gym Children’s Fitness Center for an afternoon of fun and exercise.

Coping With Stress – Massage Therapist Kathy Hager will talk to students about breathing and physical exercises, meditation, massage, and relaxation techniques that can help children reduce the stress in their busy lives.

APRIL 2010

Field Trip to Jackson Skating Center  Children will enjoy exercising while having fun roller skating. After lunch we will go to the skating center for a laughter filled afternoon. Cost is $5.00 per student ($7.00 if parents want to skate) plus cost of skate rental ($2 or $4 depending on type of skates to be rented).  Students can bring their own skates.

SEPTEMBER 2008

America’s love of their pets.  Did you know that 63% of American households have pets?  The fourth week of September is even designated as National Dog Week!  We will celebrate our nation’s love of pets with a 90 minute presentation entitled “Fur, Feathers, & Fins” at PETCO.

Date: September 30 (Pre-K to 8th grade).

 

OCTOBER 2008

Hispanic Heritage Month: - Fiesta Time!  The students will enjoy a Mexican buffet for lunch with live Mexican music. During Spanish classes Ms. Carmelina will hold mini-fiestas with the classes to discuss the history and importance of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Native American Heritage Month: – “Native Pride Dancers” will perform Native American dances, story tell, explain Native American history and teach students dances.  Authentic costumes will be worn.  Families are invited!

DECEMBER 2008

Middle Eastern Cultural and Dance Awareness – Razi amara Dance Troup (dressed in traditional dance costumes) will conduct workshops on Mid-Eastern cultures and history.  Children can participate in dance demonstrations. Families are invited!

JANUARY 2009

January is National Braille Literacy Month.  There will be two events to commemorate the accomplishments of Louis Braille and appreciate the challenges of being visually impaired in America.  The first event will be a demonstration on training guide dogs for the blind.

Date: January 9, 2009 (Pre-k – 8th grade)

 

The second event, the students will learn about Louis Braille and the Braille system of reading and writing, and view Braille books.  Guest speaker, Mr. John Lee.  from the New Jersey Commission for the Blind will meet with students to talk about being visually impaired in America. He will bring Braille readers, simulators and low vision goggles to help students appreciate the challenges of impaired eyesight.

Chinese New Year2009 is the Year of the Ox.  The students will enjoy a Chinese buffet for lunch in a festive atmosphere. Families are invited.

Performing Arts: - Students will travel to the Strand Theater and watch the performance of “Anne Frank”.

African-American History Month: - Students will travel to and take a guided tour of historical Burlington, NJ.  From the state’s oldest pharmacy that was a stop on the Underground Railroad to the home of Oliver Cromwell, an African American Revolutionary War solider, to one of the oldest African American churches the Bethlehem                African Methodist Episcopal Church, students will learn of New Jersey’s rich history.

Puppeteers: Puppeteers have been part of performing art for hundreds of years.  We are please to have the Peppermint Playhouse Puppeteers perform “The Quiz Show” which will combine the art form of puppeteers with educational information about our delicate environment.

Celebration of Irish Heritage: Hosted by the Quality of Life Committee, we will have our annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration filled with the fun of mischievous leprechauns, pots of gold and wearin’ of the green!  Families are invited.

APRIL 2009

National Poetry Month:  Students will study famous poets and their works during the month and then try their own hands at poetry.  This will be a classroom activity.

 

Styles of Clothing: Art Classes Club students will make their own paper clothing in the fashion/era of their choice.  All students will attend a fashion show where the Art Classes Club students will model their clothing.  Students will learn that clothing is very important aspect of culture.

 

 

MAY 2009

Asian Pacific American Month: In May 1990, President George H. W. Bush designated May to be Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.  Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated with community festivals, government-sponsored activities, and educational activities for students. This year's theme is "Lighting the Past, Present, and Future." We will celebrate Asian Pacific Month by having lunch at a Japanese Hibachi Restaurant.

SEPTEMBER 2007

The History of the Earth  – Fossil Digging, Raminessan Park, Holmdel

Point of Contact: Mr. John Morano

Date: September 25, 2007 (Grades 3 though 8)

Mr. Morano will do a presentation as to the fossils the students may find and how to dig for fossils.  Fossils found previously at this site date back 100 million years and include fossils from the Ice Age, dinosaur remains and marine fossils to include shark teeth.

After the presentation students will go fossil digging.  Mr. Morano will assist the students to identify fossils.

 

OCTOBER 2007

Revolutionary War: - Trip to Washington’s Crossing (K through 8)

Date: October 24, 2007

Students will visit the site of one of the pivotal events of the American Revolution.  They will visit the Washington’s Crossing Visitor Center Museum and also see the Swan Historical Foundation Collection where there are over 700 original objects circa 1740 – 1789.  If time permits the students will participate in an outdoor nature education program.  Transportation will be provided by Lakewood Township.

World War II – Trip to the USS New Jersey (K through 8)

Date: November 14, 2007

Students will visit the historic battleship the USS New Jersey on the Camden Waterfront.

 

DECEMBER 2007

Early American History – “Salem Justice” @ the Algonquin Theater for grades 3 – 8.  An historical fiction play based on the 1692 Salem Witch Trials.  When two young girls are caught in a dangerous lie, their lives change forever.

JANUARY 2008

History of the Secret Service – Presentation by Secret Service Agent David Baker for grades K – 8.  Agent Baker will show a video on the Secret Service and discuss the Secret Services’ missions of protecting the President, tracking counterfeit money and fighting terrorism.

FEBRUARY 2008

 

American History (A study of the values and courage that made our nation) – “The American Spirit” @ Georgian Court University for grades 5 – 8.  Through the eyes of Mr. Fierst (portrayed as the oldest man in America) the students will experience American history including George Washington and the rounding of our country; Chief Sequoah of the Cherokee Nation; Sajourner Truth and the Civil War; the Wright Brothers and the age of invention; Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, visionary of democracy.

Ancient Civilizations – “The Mystery of King Tut” @ the Count Basie Theater for grades 1 – 8.  A musical adventure that brings Egyptian history to life linking Tutankhamen and the man who made him famous in the modern world, archeologist Howard Carter.

MARCH 2008

 

1939-1964 – “Double V” @ Georgian Court University for grades 1 – 8.  This musical follows the parallel lives of a Jewish Family in Poland and a Black Family in America, during the turbulent years from 1939 – 1964.

Liberty Science Center – Recipient of the Merck Institute for Science Education Award

Students will visit the Liberty Science Center and enjoy a free lunch.

World War II: - “My Heart in a Suitcase” @ the Algonquin Theater for grades 3 – 8.  A powerful portrayal of the true story of the Kindertransport and a girl’s struggle to create meaning out of despair.

Ocean County History: - Walking tour of historic Georgian Court University for grades 3 - 8.  Students will learn about Local Township and university history and visit the gallery exhibit of local artist Triche Sherman.  Students will bring a bag lunch and have lunch in the Japanese Gardens.  Depart 9:00 and return 2:00.

States of Matter: Solids, Liquids and Gases – Lighter than air technology:

Point of Contact: Mr. Ron Montgomery, Lakehurst Historical Society

Dates: September 19 and 20, 2006

Mr. Montgomery will visit the school on September 19, 2006 and make a presentation on lighter than air technology and the Navy’s history of airships.

On September 20, 2006, the children will visit the Lakehurst Historical Society Museum and tour the Navy’s newest airship currently stationed at Lakehurst.

 

Meteorology: Hurricanes – Dave Curren, Meteorologist for NEWS 12 NJ

Dates: Sept. 26 & 27 (two groups of 20 students)

Students will travel to the NEWS 12 NJ to see Mr. Curren prepare for the 5:00 weather report.  Students will stay and watch the news broadcast.  Additionally, Mr. Curren will do a presentation on hurricanes and the students will be able to simulate their own weather forecast on the green screen.

Marine Environment (Clean Ocean Action’s 8th Annual Student Summit)

Clean Ocean Action is a broad based coalition dedicated to protecting the marine environment off the NJ/NY coast.  Students in grades 4 though 8 will participate in an interactive series of work stations with a variety of hands-on activities for students to learn about the environment.

Elementary Students will do volcano project with Mrs. Quinn (Each class will make their own volcano) – Students will then see a 30 minute presentation on Volcanoes on the Science Bus

Fire: The Science Behind Firefighting: Mr. Robert Haskins, Jackson Township Fire Department.

Mr. Haskins and a colleague will bring a fire truck, thermal imaging camera, fire fighting equipment, and protective gear to show to students.  He will do a presentation on how different types of fires are fought.

Chemistry: Chemicals in our environment - Presentation by Irene Fanelli, Industrial Hygienist with Innovative Technical Solutions, Inc., Burlington, NC, on dangerous chemicals and how children can be safe. Ms. Fanelli has testified as an expert witness in numerous cases concerning environmental health and safety.

JANUARY 2007

 

Machinery: The students will go to Atlantic Mills, Inc.  Atlantic Mills, Inc. manufactures disposable and reusable hand wipes, towels, dusting clothes and paper aprons for the food service industry.  Atlantic Mills will provide a tour of their facility and give a presentation on the products it makes.

Magic: Science of Magic – Presentation by Mad Science (K – 5) wherein the students will experience magic tricks and then will learn the secrets behind famous magic that will be recreated in the class.  For grades 6 – 8, Cool Magic will do a similar presentation showing the science behind more complicated magic tricks.

FEBRUARY 2007

 

Biology (Human Body) – The Biology Dept of Georgian Court University through their Service Learning Program will be doing presentations that will explain that human biological differences have a scientific basis.  Given the nature of the topic, each presentation will be tailored to the specific age group it will be presented to.

 

Social Science – Ms. Dana Jasinski, MSW candidate at Monmouth University, will present a program on cultural diversity.  Her program will compliment the Biology Dept of Georgian Court University’s presentation on the science behind why people are physically different.

 

 

 

MARCH 2007

 

Insects: All students will go to Insectropolis Bug Museum in Toms River.  The museum has 12 distinct exhibits: Central Park, Bug University, Unique Physique, Caterpillar Café, WBUG Radio, The Rock, Battle Arena, Rubber Tree Power Plant, The Tube, Hive Airport, Bugseum, and Insectropolis Zoo.

Forces of Motion: Presentation by Navy Lakehurst personnel on state of the art equipment used to recover helicopters onto small naval vessels using the RAST (Recovery Assist, Secure and Traverse) System.  Possible trip to RAST training facility.

MAY 2007

 

Air and Space: Presentation on the science of flight by Mr. William Foor, an aerospace engineer and the  former Deputy Director of Support Equipment and Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment for U.S. Navy.  Mr. Foor will then teach the children how to build paper airplanes and there will be a paper airplane contest.

Sixth through Eighth Grade students will participate in the U. S. Army (Fort Monmouth) E-CYBERMISSION Competition

 

 

There will also be a science fair chaired by Mrs. Quinn in February 2007. Details have not been finalized.  They will be finalized in December.
