Testing & Performance
A
traditional point system is used in the evaluation of pupil performance.
Reports of student progress are issued four times each year. Terra Nova Tests are administered each Spring. Ocean Day School have historically scored in the top 5-25 % nationally.
Students having grades of B or above in all major content areas will
be named to the Honor
Roll and those main-taining Honor Roll status throughout the year will
be inducted into the Ocean Day School Honor Society in June.
Entrance Testing
Entrance testing is done for all students registering for admittance
into the accelerated kindergarten program. Usually scheduled for the
second week of June, groups of two or three children meet with a kindergarten
teacher and/or director and participate in a series of tasks designed
to assess readiness for the full day program.
Other Considerations
We consider large and small motor development, visual and auditory development,
cognitive level, and attention span are looked at in an effort to insure
that the child will meet with success in this unique program, which
starts children reading phonetically controlled material often as
soon as the new calendar year begins. Testing usually takes about
forty-five minutes but it can take longer when the possibility of cross-grading presents itself. Young learners who are already reading should
be brought to the attention of the director for possible additional
assessment.
Students entering grades one through eight are tested in decoding,
reading comprehension, and mathematics. A writing sample is taken on
a given theme. Once all entering students are tested, placement decisions
are made and children are placed in groups accordingly. Parents are
notified by mail of the placement decisions.
